Unpatched Lives

The dark is warm as blood
filled with the swimming calls of frogs.

My mind is damp from this marriage
of water and air, these rains
that have swallowed the land.

Each cell is swollen and heavy.
Words like plump caterpillars
roll in my mind. Leaves drip.

I watch the sky turn the color of pewter
while the day puts on an old sweater
with holes at the elbows.

We live unpatched lives, you and I.
We let these threads of ourselves
hang loose to form soul tangles
from our dancing.

Poems have built nests in us.
